Surf City…Main Beach at the height of summer is easily the country’s most colourful and bustling surfing mecca. It is bounded by the landmark peak of Mauao at one end, and a rocky peninsula of Moturiki Island at the other (with crowded right- hand surf break ‘The Blowhole’).
Main Beach, with its high rise apartments and cafe culture draws thousands of a hot summer’s day. It’s a neo-Californian affair complete with a wooden boardwalk, surfboard hire, etc. Be in early for a park on a sunny day and stay away if you don’t like crowds and see-and-be-seen.
Half way down the beach are good public toilets (award-winning design) with changing rooms and showers, and a viewing deck on top. Main Beach has lots of choice in cafes and restaurants.
