A privately owned island, 12km off the coast, Motiti is a mix of Maori land, avocado orchards and cattle farming, so access to some parts is restricted. Fishing, swimming, snorkelling and diving are favourite pastimes in the island waters – with the wreck of a former tug, Taioma, one of the attractions.
The Wills family run low-key, family-oriented accommodation, with motel-type units and a bunk house that sleeps 16 people. Inflatable boats are available for fishers or divers to hire. Guests must take all their own food and drink. Photo courtesy Aerius Helicopters who can fly you here.
