Whether you’re into ‘boy’s toys’ a history buff, or simply curious, the Tauranga Military Collection (part of the Classic Flyers Museum) certainly delivers. This collection of U.S. and British militaria – one of the best in the country – covers everything from grenades and 25-pounder guns, to an American U.S. Army staff car – an elegant 1938 Buick.
It began as a private collection by the Moreland family, and ‘what started as a family hobby, turned into a museum.’ War-time parachutes hung from the ceiling add to the ‘military base’ atmosphere of what is a mini-museum in its own right. The collection is a short walk from Classic Flyers in a neighbouring building, and perfectly sited beside the vintage Korean War M.A.S.H. helicopter and mock-up camp operation.
The admission price to Classic Flyers aviation museum also covers the Military Collection – and is a small price to pay for such a double-act. Classic Flyers was already a ‘don’t miss,’ but with this great collectionas an add-on, it is even more of a must.
