Looking for Local Tauranga Bus information? Local bus services are operated by BayBus, which is funded by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. You can catch a BayBus locally around Tauranga.

The Bay Hopper

For travel around the entire Tauranga urban network, the local Tauranga bus service is called the Bay Hopper. The network operates from Tauranga out to beachside towns Mount Maunganui and Papamoa. You can also travel to outlying Tauranga suburbs like Otumoetai, Bethlehem, Greerton and Welcome Bay.

Tauranga Bus Fares

Adult Fares

Adult Fares vary depending on the stage/distance you are travelling. There are 2 fares stages. Around Tauranga the Adult fare is $3.00.

Child Fares

Children under 5 travel free. Kids aged 5 – 15 pay $1.80 on all routes. Students can travel on a $1.80 childs fare provided they have ID. No ID or school uniform means an Adult fare is paid.


Senior citizens can travel for free on local Tauranga bus services with their SuperGold card. The only times that aren’t free are the peak morning til 8.50am and peak afternoon periods (3.10pm to 6.20pm) where the cost is $1.80. All other bus travel is free, including all weekend.

Concession Card

Bay Hopper operates a concession card called the Smart Ride Card. This is a prepaid card that you can load with credit to use whenever you like. Adults save around 60c per ride, and Child fares save about 30c. Smart ride cards can be purchased from the Tauranga i-Site on Willow St, or from the driver. The Cards are free but a minimum of $10 must be loaded on the first, and subsequent times.The Smart Ride is only available for travel around the Tauranga urban network.

Regional Bus Services

Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty region are growing, and this is resulting in more demand for public transport. Each year the council adds more routes to local areas and more frequency to travel around the region to nearby towns like Te Puke, Rotorua.

The Twin City Express operates between Tauranga, Te Puke and Rotorua. You can travel anywhere between Tauranga and Rotorua for $11.60 or less – this includes travel to Rotorua Airport.
